Short Sunderlands of No.10 Squadron RAAF

The painting depicts the arrival in Sydney of the first of the 10 Squadron Sunderlands in 1944, four years
after their actual delivery date. Formed in July 1939, 10 Sqd was sent to England to take delivery of seven
Sunderlands. It was arranged for the aircraft to be flown to Australia when German forces invaded
Poland in 1939. Australia agreed to a British request that the squadron would remain in England to assist
in the protection of Allied shipping in the Atlantic. No 10 Squadron Sunderlands did not arrive in
Australia until 1944 when they became No 40 Squadron RAAF.
